# Temperature Control for Incubator Chambers

**Precise Temperature Control for Cell and Tissue Culture**

Incubator chambers used in hospitals, laboratories and research facilities create controlled environments for growing and maintaining **cell and tissue cultures**. **Precise temperature control is essential** because even relatively small temperature deviations can affect cell growth and protein stability.

For mammalian cell cultures typically maintained near **37°C**, temperatures that are too low can slow cell growth, while excessive temperatures can cause sensitive proteins to denature. Incubators must therefore maintain stable temperature alongside controlled **humidity, carbon dioxide (CO₂) and oxygen levels**.

## Thermal Management Challenges in Incubators

Incubator manufacturers need to maintain a stable chamber environment while working within limited equipment space.

Key thermal design requirements include:

- **Precise heating and cooling**
- **Uniform temperature throughout the chamber**
- **Compact thermal management components**
- **Controlled airflow**
- Operation in **high-humidity environments**
- Protection against moisture and dust
- Easy-to-clean chamber designs
- Reliable operation over extended periods

Depending on chamber size and operating conditions, incubator thermal loads can range from approximately **30 W to more than 400 W**. CO₂ incubators may also operate at **95–98% relative humidity** and CO₂ concentrations from approximately **0.3% to 19.9%**.

### **Why Use Thermoelectric Cooling in an Incubator?**

Thermoelectric technology is particularly well suited to incubators where **precise bidirectional temperature control, compact size, low vibration and long-term reliability** are more important than very high refrigeration capacity.

Unlike a conventional cooling-only system, thermoelectric devices can switch between heating and cooling without separate refrigeration and heating circuits, simplifying temperature control around the chamber setpoint.

### **Thermoelectric Heating and Cooling for Incubators**

**Thermoelectric coolers (TECs)** use the Peltier effect to actively transfer heat and can provide both heating and cooling by reversing the direction of electrical current.

For incubator chambers, thermoelectric temperature control provides a **compact, solid-state alternative to compressor-based refrigeration**. Because the same thermoelectric system can heat or cool, it can maintain the chamber setpoint as ambient conditions and internal heat loads change.

Key benefits include:

- Precise temperature control
- Heating and cooling from a single technology
- Rapid temperature adjustment
- Compact form factor
- Low vibration and acoustic noise
- Solid-state reliability
- Low maintenance requirements
- No refrigerant required at the thermoelectric cooling stage

The absence of refrigerant within the thermoelectric cooling circuit can also help equipment manufacturers address changing requirements surrounding conventional refrigerants.
