Infrared Sensor (IR) Cooling

Infrared (IR) sensors detect infrared radiation emitted or reflected by an object and convert that information into an electrical signal or thermal image. They are used in thermal imaging, security and surveillance, industrial inspection, temperature sensing, machine vision and other optical sensing systems.

Because detector performance is highly temperature sensitive, many infrared sensing systems require precise temperature stabilization or below-ambient cooling to reduce thermal noise and maintain image quality.

Thermal Camera

Why Infrared Sensors Require Cooling

Thermal noise generated by the detector and surrounding electronics can interfere with weak infrared signals. As detector temperature increases or fluctuates, this noise can reduce sensitivity, image resolution and measurement repeatability.

Thermoelectric coolers (TECs) provide localized, solid-state cooling directly at the sensor, helping:

  • Reduce thermal noise
  • Improve image resolution and sensitivity
  • Maintain stable detector temperature
  • Support detection across a broader infrared spectrum
  • Provide compact, vibration-free cooling
